Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange, says it is working to recover funds after hackers took $6 billion, the biggest crypto theft on record.
What Binance says
The exchange halted withdrawals, has frozen $3 billion of the stolen assets and says it will cover investors' losses.
Who did it
Author Geoff White told PBS's Geoff Bennett that moving digital money is as simple as a bank transfer, so stealing $6 billion in under 20 minutes is plausible. Suspicion falls on North Korea for two reasons: it has been blamed for past hacks, such as the roughly $1.5 billion Bybit theft in 2025, and investigators are tracing the funds on the public blockchain ledger. White advised crypto holders to be prepared to lose that money.
