'Golden age of brewing' may be over

Local News · Sunday, November 1, 2026

Memphis's craft-brewing scene is losing ground. Crosstown Brewing Co. closed a couple of weeks ago after eight years on Concourse Avenue. Ghost River Brewing Co. closed its Beale Street location in May and consolidated at its South Main brewery. Memphis Made Brewing Co. filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in August 2025 and closed its taproom in March 2026.

Some brewery owners blame rising fuel prices and the economy, while others point to people drinking less alcohol, a trend that has brought more mocktails and nonalcoholic options to restaurants, breweries and liquor stores. Four years ago, Grind City's Hopper Seely said he saw a downward trend and thought the "craft-brewing bubble may officially be popped."
