PBS NewsHour's Simon Ostrovsky and Katia Patin report from a Ukrainian city hit by Russian drones during a Starlink disruption, which President Zelenskyy has indicated contributed to civilian deaths.
The strike
On Oct. 14, soon after Ukrainian troops noticed fast drones having trouble connecting to the network, a jet-powered Shahed-type drone hit a supermarket in Lutsk and killed six people. A fire destroyed the building. One victim, Maria Matviiuk, worked at a European goods store; her family described her love of flowers.
The background
Ukraine's defense depends heavily on Elon Musk's satellite constellation for communication and drone operations. Musk admitted last week to ordering the slowdown, which drew bipartisan anger in Washington.
