The Justice Department asked a federal judge to order Alaska election officials to preserve and separate ballots that rank Daniel J. Sullivan, arguing his candidacy could confuse voters with incumbent Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan.
The request
The department sought expedited action before Election Day and confirmed a criminal probe it said has been underway for months and expanded after reporting on alleged recruitment of the candidate.
Alaska's objection
State election officials opposed the request, arguing that ballots are commingled and that separating them would conflict with ballot secrecy. The legal fight adds to the pressure on a Senate race expected to help determine control of the chamber.
