Floodwaters hit Pagosa Springs, Colorado, on Nov. 1 and 2, forcing evacuations in the southwest Colorado hot-springs town.
The river
According to The Pagosa Springs Sun, the San Juan River crested at 16.81 feet, below the 22-foot level officials had feared, and began to recede. The town's Nov. 2 update said downtown evacuation orders remained in effect and residents should not return until officials clear it.
The closures
The Denver Gazette reported that highways, a hot spring and Wolf Creek Ski Area were closed amid erosion, sewage discharge and dangerous floodwater.
El Niño
The AP reported that El Niño is expected to increase heavy-rain and flood risk across the Southwest through winter and spring. Another AP story described people leaving their homes in the Southwest, including Sedona, Arizona.
