Texas Tech QB Castellanos, others still eligible as court rules against NCAA

Sports · Saturday, October 31, 2026

A Kentucky Court of Appeals judge on Friday denied the NCAA's request for emergency relief, so a group of 38 athletes, including Texas Tech quarterback Thomas Castellanos, can keep playing for now.

A Jefferson Circuit Court judge in Louisville had granted a temporary injunction on Oct. 16 letting the athletes compete in 2026-27 while the NCAA appeals. The case involves members of the Class of 2022 who were denied an extra season under the NCAA's five-for-five rule. Judge Combs wrote that the NCAA had not shown "imminent, ruinous, and incalculable injury" and that "it behooves no one" for their eligibility to flip-flop. The case is not over; a three-judge panel will still rule. Others affected include Missouri's Mark Mitchell Jr., Kentucky's Alex Afari Jr. and LSU's Skyy Clark.
