Thunder's $500 million problem: Execs on what they could -- and should -- do

Sports · Saturday, October 31, 2026

ESPN's Brian Windhorst and Tim MacMahon asked league executives what the Oklahoma City Thunder should do after injuries to Jalen Williams (fractured left fibula, dislocated ankle) and Cason Wallace (labrum tear). The column was written before the Thunder announced that Chet Holmgren would also miss eight to 10 weeks.

Windhorst says he has never seen a championship-level team potentially lose two valuable players in one evening in the first week of a season. The injuries have prompted heavy discussion in rival front offices, some of it about strategy and cascading moves around the league. One point they stress is that general manager Sam Presti, in his 19th year on the job, is not going to panic.
