Rivals University School of Jackson and Jackson Christian met on Thursday, Oct. 29, in Week 11 of Tennessee high school football, and The Jackson Sun's photographers were there. The result was a 49-7 win for the Bruins that clinched the Division II-A West Region championship.
What happened on the field
USJ's running game was the story. According to MaxPreps, Marr Grimes rushed for 172 yards and four touchdowns, and Ben Spencer ran for 239 yards and one touchdown. Quarterback Cayden Creech threw for 102 yards and two touchdowns while completing 85.7% of his passes. The Jackson Sun reported that Spencer capped the night late in the fourth quarter with a 95-yard touchdown run after taking a pitch from Creech, and he said afterward, "A little tired, but it felt great."
The records
USJ improved to 9-1 and won its eighth straight game. Jackson Christian fell to 8-2, ending a six-game home winning streak that dated back to last season. The Eagles had scored at least 31 points in each of their previous two games, but the Bruins' defense held them to seven.
USJ Athletics congratulated the football team on social media for securing the region title after what it called a convincing performance by all.
