Victor Wembanyama scored a season-high 43 points on a career-high 34 shot attempts Saturday night, leading the San Antonio Spurs to a 121-111 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves.
A record-setting shot count
It was the first time the Spurs have won a game in which Wembanyama took 30 or more shots. They lost the two previous times he reached that mark, including a 117-114 loss to the Knicks on Christmas Day 2024, when he took 31 shots for 42 points. The 22-year-old also blocked five shots, making him the first Spur since David Robinson in 1996 to post at least 40 points and five blocks in a game.
Close to the basket
Wembanyama made three of eight 3-point tries, but 12 of his other 14 baskets came from two feet or closer, including four alley-oops and four dunks. After a season-opening loss to Oklahoma City he had said he needed "to go back to playing the basketball I like." Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said Wembanyama is hard to stop when he plays off his teammates, and guard Dylan Harper added a career-high 25 points.
